Woohoo! Today is the start of SOYFI Week!

When it comes to icons, I’m not the most adventurous chap. I’ve stuck with the same flag and headshot from my Yahoo avatar since I first set up this blog back in October ’08.
I have my reasons for not changing mine (not least of which is that it takes off twenty pounds AND twenty years), but that’s not to say I don’t enjoy some of the fantastic creations I’ve seen on my friends’ pages.
With that in mind, I’ve decided that here on An Englishman in New Jersey today is the start of SOYFI Week (Show off Your Favorite Icon Week).
Here’s how it works:
Just post your favorite icon (or two icons if you prefer) in a comment below and I’ll upload them into this entry for other folks to admire.
This event lasts all week, so if you’re feeling creative, why not have a bash at creating your own? Also, if anyone knows of a good website/journal entry where folks can go to learn how to make an icon, please let me know and I’ll post a link to it here.

ETA: a_r_williams suggests the following possible sources for icon creation:

Adobe Photoshop ( which has some high and low price point software ), Adobe Illustrator, Gimp ( freeware ), and Inkscape ( freeware ).
Have fun!

Ooh, I love that rain falling on the leaves. Gorgeous.

I'm lucky to have any photo up for an icon. I don't remember how I got it there (it's from the movie Motorcycle Diaries), and I don't dare remove it because I'll never remember how to get it back. One day I'll have time to learn the computer. I'd love to be able to play more.

You and me both. I need to make an icon for the FAWG community.

I think I stole this one off someone. But I can't recall who.

I loves me some Curly -- especially with attitude.

Who knew he could be such a tough-looking guy?

Did you ever see the three stooges A-Team vid?

this is the latest addition to my icon family. I use it when discussing SF. It's Titan.

I have two: This one is really a picture of one of my favorite cards. It is SO ME. I love to laugh.

That reminds me of one of my girls. She always laughs when I tell her off :(

And then there is the cake. It was my second cake I decorated in a cake decorating class. As you know, I love cake. I love butterflies. And pink is my signature color.

Did it taste as good as it looks?

This is probably my favorite LJ user pic, although truly, I'm not wild about any of them. It's mostly because I have icon envy. One of my friends (real life friend, as well as LJ friend) is scottedelman and because he has attended cons around the world, edited a spec fic magazine, rubbed shoulders with writers, fans, and editors from places as far away as China, and because he started his career working at Marvel Comics, he has a bevy of cool icons, of which the coolest is the one on this post which is a comic-style version of Scott himself, drawn by a Marvel artist.

Hard to get worked up over a space shot of the earth.

It's funny. I still remember the first time I saw a photo of the earth from space. It was an amazing feeling, but as you say, it's nothing to get worked up about these days.

You know I used to be in, like, a billion icon-contest communities, right? Have you seen my icon collection? If not... here's the 'start' page for both my 'no reason' icons and my icontest icons.. Of my 'current' icons (I made), though, I think this one is my favorite...
Feb. 19th, 2010 03:57 am (UTC)
Or this one.

Favorite icon: Gah, there are many to choose from.

However, I am still rather fond of this one, inspired by the PotterPuppetPals incomplete video. chickenflickr at flicking_icons did this one up.

Now, let's see if I remember the .html correctly, after posting...
Feb. 19th, 2010 01:19 pm (UTC)
Of course, who can choose just one?
