Woohoo! Today is the start of SOYFI Week!

When it comes to icons, I’m not the most adventurous chap. I’ve stuck with the same flag and headshot from my Yahoo avatar since I first set up this blog back in October ’08.

I have my reasons for not changing mine (not least of which is that it takes off twenty pounds AND twenty years), but that’s not to say I don’t enjoy some of the fantastic creations I’ve seen on my friends’ pages.

With that in mind, I’ve decided that here on An Englishman in New Jersey today is the start of SOYFI Week (Show off Your Favorite Icon Week).

Here’s how it works:

Just post your favorite icon (or two icons if you prefer) in a comment below and I’ll upload them into this entry for other folks to admire.

This event lasts all week, so if you’re feeling creative, why not have a bash at creating your own? Also, if anyone knows of a good website/journal entry where folks can go to learn how to make an icon, please let me know and I’ll post a link to it here.

ETA: a_r_williams suggests the following possible sources for icon creation:

Adobe Photoshop ( which has some high and low price point software ), Adobe Illustrator, Gimp ( freeware ), and Inkscape ( freeware ).

Have fun!

Considering I've only got three icons, that was easy. ;-)

Hard to pick a favorite. I'm rather proud of my sith plotbunny, though...

I don't really have a favourite amongst my icons because I usually try to choose something that's a least vaguely appropriate to the post or comment.

I made all my icons myself from photos wot I took. This one, which is one I often use for writing posts, required using the self timer. :)

Good one :)

What software do you use to make icons?

Mine's nothing extravagant, but I created it myself and it suits me.

I had given some thought to writing a post on how to create stuff like this, but I had never given any time to it. I may try and put something together in the near future.

There are programs like Adobe Photoshop ( which has some high and low price point software ), Adobe Illustrator, Gimp ( freeware ), and Inkscape ( freeware ).

There are also How-to books on all of these programs.

Books on Gimp

Books on Inkscape

Some more information on the differences between these:

Photoshop & Gimp:

Both of these programs use raster graphics. They are best used for image manipulation of pictures or anything where a high quality photo is desired.

Illustrator & Inkscape:

Both of these use vector graphics. They are best used for creating logos or posters where you may want to change the image dimensions without losing image quality.

I'm afraid I can't choose just one as my favorite... I've got 105 on my journal at all times PLUS a folder of about 200 more that I swap with once in a bluemoon. But the one that says the most about me, I think, is the one I keep going back to as my standard.

I have tried using other, fun icons--but everyone says the same thing, "Where's the crow wearing boots???" I think I am unrecognizable without Krahe! So this is the one I always use, unless talking about one of my kids. They LOVE that I used their pics. Mwhahahahhahahaa!

I don't really have a favorite of my icons, because I love them all and they're each appropriate to different comments/posts, but my writer-ly icon is this one.
