Which Cons will you attend this year?

First thing Friday morning, I nipped down to the post office to mail my registration for the Write Stuff Conference  – In  Allentown, PA (March 25-27).

This will be my third year there. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll be among those lucky enough to register in time for the two-day, pre-conference workshop, How to Plot Like The Pros, with James N. Frey (How To Write a Damn Good Novel).

For the main event, which starts on the Friday evening and finishes the next day at around 5:00pm, I hope to get a place on Page Cuts, in which the anonymous first page of your WIP is read aloud then critiqued by a panel of industry professionals, and a two-hour workshop, Start a Fire on Page One, with Bill Kent.

There are plenty of other things going on (see
here for the conference web-page – scroll down for the ‘Conference at a glance’ section), including workshops, agent/editor appointments and the annual 100-word fiction/non-fiction/poetry contests, but the main attraction for me is the people.

Last year, I’d say about 150 writers attended. Everyone was friendly. I felt like I was at a happy event with distant relatives (without the bickering and family feuds).

If I could only pick one con to attend this year, The Write Stuff would be it (lucky for me, I don’t have to. Come November, I’ll be at PhilCon).

How about you?

Which cons do you plan to attend this year?

ETA: (which, thanks to jimhines, I now know means "Edited to add")  Does anyone know of a site where folks can find info about writing conventions?

I may go to Baltacon - but it seems like I may not.

I'll probalby go to Philcon - since I don't need a hotel room for that. I need to be cheep this year.

I *want* to go to NE crimebake this year - but I would have to quit my job for that. I work that weekend.

PhilCon 2009 was great fun.

That said, I think of PhilCon as more of a networking event, would you agree?

I thought it was too and I only got to go for Saturday.

I think, yeah there is a lot of networking done there, but for me in a way it's sort of 'old home week'. I grew up here then moved away for many years and since I've been back I haven't been very active in the sci-fi/fantasy/horror community. I mean I hit Between Books once a month and I talk to Greg and one of the old owners of Days of Knights pritty often but I don't get out and *see* people any more.

I have a freind at work who says I need to spend more time with 'my people', she's probalby right.

I didn't know about this con in Allentown. Have you been before? What are your thoughts on it?

I'm going to shoot for Readercon and World Fantasy Con this year. That's the goal, anyway. ;)

This will be my third year in a row. I've little experience to compare (just BEA NY in '07 and last year's PhilCon), but I found it most helpful and lots of fun.

Re '...too rich for m pocketbook'

I know what you mean. Every year it's a case of 'So many Cons, so little time/cash' ;)

THanks for sharing )
