Exactly one year ago today, I made my first blog post here on Live Journal .

Looking back, I remember how nervous I felt about posting my thoughts online. What if nobody read them? What if people thought I was stupid or told me I didn’t know what I was talking about?

Only one person commented on that first post (my friend from the GSHW,
dqg_neal ). The fact that someone not only read the entry, but took the time to leave a remark, gave me the confidence to keep at it.

That’s not to say I haven’t made mistakes. I know for certain that I’ve (albeit unintentionally) upset some people as I learned how different folks use their journals, and how they have their own ideas of what kind of feedback they want from their readers.

Still, on the one-year anniversary of that debut entry, I feel much more confident, and very comfortable within the LJ community.

Would I have kept at it if no-one had commented on that first post? I hope so, but in any case, I’m most grateful to Neal for taking the time to respond. I’m sure he forgot about it soon after, but it made a big difference to me.

How about you?

I know some folks feel it takes time away from writing. I understand that point, but I have to say, I find LJ inspires me to write more and better fiction.

I suspect that while LJ -like all social networking sites- can be a big timesink, the community is focused on writing so much that after a while you just absorb it into your bloodstream.

As for LJ helping me write better, that's a whole other ball of wax. I'd like to think that I absorbed something from all of the authors here -published or not- but I kind of doubt it. My writing still sounds like me.

I meant that it inspires/motivates me to write more and better fiction.

Oh yeah, it does that. No disputes here; if you need motivation it's here in spades.
