Exactly one year ago today, I made my first blog post here on Live Journal .

Looking back, I remember how nervous I felt about posting my thoughts online. What if nobody read them? What if people thought I was stupid or told me I didn’t know what I was talking about?

Only one person commented on that first post (my friend from the GSHW,
dqg_neal ). The fact that someone not only read the entry, but took the time to leave a remark, gave me the confidence to keep at it.

That’s not to say I haven’t made mistakes. I know for certain that I’ve (albeit unintentionally) upset some people as I learned how different folks use their journals, and how they have their own ideas of what kind of feedback they want from their readers.

Still, on the one-year anniversary of that debut entry, I feel much more confident, and very comfortable within the LJ community.

Would I have kept at it if no-one had commented on that first post? I hope so, but in any case, I’m most grateful to Neal for taking the time to respond. I’m sure he forgot about it soon after, but it made a big difference to me.

How about you?

Well, I started my blog in October 2004, but it was several months before anyone commented. Probably because I wasn't saying anything of much interest, and I wasn't terribly regular about posting. (Still am not, for that matter.) It was my friend marfisk, who had tagged me with a meme. About a year after I started the blog.

One of these days, I really have to figure out what 'meme' stands for - 'eta' too for that matter :(

Thanks for sharing :)

I believe (my inherent laziness makes it an ordeal to go look for sure) my first commenter was mylefteye, who introduced me to his entire flist, who very kindly friended me. Of course, I believe his ulterior motive was to get me someplace to yammer on so I'd quit bugging him with emails. ;-D I wasn't sure I'd like it here, but apparently I did!

Oh dear. Still, with a name like Meanie MacCrankypants, you'd have thought he'd be used to being seen as a villain by now :)

Kelly does some excellent posts. I think she's a great example of how to use your blog effectively.

Wait, people are supposed to comment on your blogs?

Maggie Steivfater. Yep, I'm that cool. NOT! I went a while with nothing . . . my friends read, but never commented. Then I posted my contest entry for Maggie and she commented.

I'm still a newbie (Oct 2009), but I'm learning the ropes. Your blog has been great at helping me connect with others. Thank you!!!!

You're most welcome :)

One of the things I like about Maggie's blog is that you can tell she's having fun, though I'm still waiting for her to post an mp3 from her bagpipe-playing days :)

For one year after I started my blog in early 2006, very few people posted so I assumed there was nobody else around my corner of the blogosphere. Still, I kept at it because, well, it was my creative outlet. I later found that, just people aren't posting, it doesn't mean they're not reading.

'...just people aren't posting, it doesn't mean they're not reading.'

Absolutely. One look at LJ's new My Stats page (in the drop-down menu, 'Journal' on the Home page) should make people feel better about their readership.

Thanks for sharing :)

Heh.

scriva  was the first person to comment.

I started my blog because a group of us were doing NanoWrimo and keeping up with each other. I created the blog in November and didn't receive the first comment until February.

Most of the people who were in that group don't post or blog anymore. But I am glad they suggested it or I doubt I would have ever started blogging.
