Excuses! Excuses!

Looking out at the 15” blanket of snow that covers the ground this morning, I realize I’m going to need some assistance shoveling the yard.

No doubt some of my potential helpers will attempt to excuse themselves from the task. Since I’m known for being a bit of a slave driver when it comes to household chores etc, I’d like your opinion on what constitutes a valid reason for not helping me dig a path back to civilization.

Which (if any) of the following excuses should I accept as a valid reason for leaving me to shovel the yard on my own this morning:

I promised my friends I’d play Warriors of Zeltron IV: Killer Assassins of Death with them online today.
I’d love to help, but I’m left-handed.
Do it all yourself! Lord knows you need the exercise.
We only have two shovels.
I’m only five years old.
I’m just here to deliver the pizza.
None of the above are valid reasons.

If you can think of another acceptable excuse, please let me know. I’d hate to be unfairly tough on these folks

Or...just stay inside and don't shovel the yard? :-D

I wish that were an option :)

Im working on my NOVEL!

And they live in a nice, sunny, warm, climate. Why would I go outside for?

It would only make me lose the tactile sense of me being in touch with my setting. :p

'I'm working on my NOVEL!'

Lol, I hadn't thought of excusing myself :)

Why shovel what will melt on its own?
Dec. 20th, 2009 10:58 am (UTC)
That's a thought. Where did I put my hairdryer ;)

Spare the poor pizza man! And how cruel, calling him to your house on so cold a day.

Dec. 20th, 2009 05:11 pm (UTC)
You're right of course. I ssuppose I should have at least ordered a pizza ;)
Dec. 20th, 2009 02:58 pm (UTC)
If that pizza deliverer wants a tip, let 'em hoist a shovel!!
Dec. 20th, 2009 05:12 pm (UTC)
My thoughts exactly :)

They all sound like perfectly valid excuses to me, though you could con the five year old into making a snowman out of the snow in the path.
Dec. 20th, 2009 05:13 pm (UTC)
You're too soft :)

Being a lefty, I love #2.

If you really want help, I've got three helpers who love to shovel snow. Only two drawbacks:

-They're 6, 8, and 11.
-We live a good 14+ hours away.

They were severely bummed that their snowmen -one normal, one Indiana Jones- collapsed when the snow turned to a light drizzle yesterday. If they knew that there were places that got more than the two inches we got....

No problem. Sure it'll be dark by the time they get here, but we have flashlights :)

There is the, "I'll make myself bleed," which is my husband's reason to not do house work. And, amazingly enough, he does manage to make himself bleed whenever he does pitch in. I don't know how he does it.
Dec. 20th, 2009 05:28 pm (UTC)
Especially when he's only folding towels ;)

Usually, the 5-year-old is the one who's eager to help, to prove he/she is grown up enough. It's the older ones who wimp out on the sofa. My mother was a big advocate of the kitchen timer. "You have to do x for y number of minutes." Sometimes it worked; sometimes we worked as slowly as possible. What would your old gran do?
Dec. 20th, 2009 05:29 pm (UTC)
'What would your old gran do?'

Cattle prod. Definitely the cattle prod :(

My excuse: If you wanted help shoveling, you should have helped me bake cookies!
Dec. 20th, 2009 05:30 pm (UTC)
That sounds like a good excuse to me :)
Dec. 20th, 2009 04:54 pm (UTC)
I picked Left handed - becasue I'm tired of people complaining that I chuck the snow in the wrong direction. Get over it and get to the other side idjit.

We got 24 inches here...
Dec. 20th, 2009 05:31 pm (UTC)
24 inches of snow = :(

If you leave it for a day, then some enterprising neighbor kid will come along and offer to shovel if for cash. Perhaps don't order pizza during this time in case the guy slips and sues you.
Dec. 20th, 2009 05:34 pm (UTC)
Cash? They'd want cash?

Whatever happened to the old 'Shovel a couple of tons of snow for your English neighbors as a goodwill gesture' spirit?
Dec. 20th, 2009 05:40 pm (UTC)
Your neighbors figure it will do their English neighbor good to see what happens when rain turns just a little colder.
Dec. 20th, 2009 09:14 pm (UTC)
I don't mind seeing what happens, it's the shovelling bit I'm not fond of :(
