Meager Puddle of Limelight Awards: update

Today's the last day for entering your titles for a Meager Puddle of Limelight Award

So far, I have plenty of entries for the Best Book Title and Best Novella or Anthology Titles but only four for Best Flash Fiction Title (1,000 words or less).

LJ-users will vote for their favorites in all three categories during September.  Aside from having a bit of fun, and the always desirable bragging rights which come with any award, the winners get interviewed here on my blog.

If you'd like to take part, all you need to do is let me know the title, genre and category of your entry (see the above link for more details).  You can do that in a comment, or if you prefer, a private message.

Entries for the three Best Title Puddles close tonight (August 31) at 11:59pm US/Eastern.

I salute you! This is a valuable service! If writing is a bear, titles are a grizzly bear. I am rarely happy with mine.

Years ago I belonged to the Del Rey Digital Workshop, which later became the Online Writing Workshop for Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror. I didn't stick with it because I had a face-to-face group that I felt helped me more, but one benefit was, it helped me evaluate titles. If I posted a novel excerpt and no one read it, it meant the title sucked. It was one time when the anonymity and sheer volume of online readers really paid off.

Me, I love titles.

I guess it's something I picked up in my songwriting days, when we often had (what we thought was) good music, but no words. I often came up with the title first and used that to inspire the lyrics.

I still do it for stories. In fact, I came up with the title for Waking up Jack Thunder before I ever had an idea for a plot.

It amazes me how different writers are. I know writers who start writing when the think of the ending, and others who need to know the title. For me, it's always the opening scene that pops into my head first-- although it doesn't always stay the opening scene after the first draft.

I like to know the ending too. I guess we're all different.

Thanks for sharing :)

Hmm, could I enter my fanfiction titles into the short stories section? Although I think only 2 of them are under 1000, the others are under 3k or 4k.

Sure. I have two novel entries from you already, so you can still enter another three titles :)

Hmm, have 'Damage' then - my favourite title is for something longer, and unfinished.
My favouite title is for a monologue I did for school, called 'Flying Visit', but it's only amusing if you know the story already. I don't really do entertaining titles, I usually try and get things I think are interesting, or fit the mood of the story. I'm not a titles person. ; )

Your titles seem fine to me. Is Damage a short or a flash piece? Also, what's the genre?

Meh. Damage is... *checks* a flash piece. Humor. My first bit of humor that turned out ok!

My title "Reflections in a Fogged Mirror" is for a flash piece. Sorry I neglected to mention that earlier!

You know, I did remember a book title that I actually like. The Shadows One Walks. A little dramatic, but then so am I. :)
