You know, I'd never heard of book trailers until a few months ago, but it's clear that a good one can have a big impact on sales, don't you think?

I think it's like anything else in promotion. You never know what works until you try it.

I'd be interested to see if there's any kind of official 'book trailer of the year' award. If there isn't, I imagine there soon will be.

I'll have to send along the info from the book trailer link to some friends who are farther along than I am. Very good point. I always buy a book based on the writing rather than the plot synopsis or hook on the cover. It's always what I read in the pages. I hadn't thought about that being extended to the book trailers. Very helpful.

Even though a_r_williams is on my flist, I missed Aaron's Ray Bradbury video when he put it up. That's really great! Since I write primarily short fiction, I really enjoyed that one!

I got quite choked up watching the bit about The Lake.

Yes, which led to Bradbury saying that he'd found "the secret" after ten years of writing stories. He found his interior self from writing "The Lake" and wasn't writing exterior stuff.

The music lyrics link is important. I had some lyrics in my first published story, didn't know about this "no fair use" clause until after it had been typeset and too late to make changes. I got in touch with the singer/lyricist from the band. He was quite the gentleman and after reviewing the story, gave permission for no fee.

But it could have sucked really badly for me, for the publisher, and for everyone else in the anthology.

Interestingly, neither the editor nor the publisher flagged this - they were as unaware of copyright law regarding music lyrics as I was. So, that's a learning experience in itself: especially with small press, don't expect the publishers and editors to cover your ass.

That was lucky :)

I think most folks are decent about this kind of thing, especially if it's an honest mistake.

it probably helps if it's a marxist punk band.
