What’s your current WIP?

I’m taking a break from trying to climb out of the plot-hole I fell into while revising my sci-fi thriller, Waking up Jack Thunder.

This afternoon, I'm going to write a piece of flash fiction.  It’s a 100-word drabble called The ‘L’ Word, about a woman who decides that three little words will change her life.

[Update: Finished the story.  I changed the title to Three Little Words, and it's no longer a drabble (wordcount 225), but I think it needed some extra meat on its bones :)  I'll give it a good going over then pitch it somewhere at the weekend.]

How about you?

What’s the title of your current WIP? What’s it about?

The title of my WIP is "Vengeance is Mine". It's another Haxan story.

I'm not trying to be coy, but it's about vengeance, but looking at it from a different perspective.

This is the project you were excited yesterday, right?

Sounds like the title's doesn't give away the plot in the way one would expect. I like it already :)

The one I'm working on today I'm still trying to come up with a better title. For now it is just "The Factory."

I'm not sure I can explain what it is about -- A scissor factory, women workers, demon hot spot, one fallen angel wanting redemption--

Good luck with your plot problem. Hope you solve it soon.

Is it a novel?

City of Shadows is working title for current WIP. Urban fantasy set in London.

I've also just started something else, which is saved under Lost Days. Possibly YA Post-A fiction, and yet to develop much past a 'hmm, let's see'...sort of playing around. :-) You can see the opening scene on my LJ...

I also have a piece of what will probably wind up being steampunk / Victoriana / time travel / magic fantasy...but that's still in the thinking process, and only the first chapter is written!

Ooh, excellent title :)

Sounds like you're the same as me, with half a dozen projects going on at once :)

It has no title, but it's my action/mystery NaNo from last year. I failed NaNo, but I still want to (someday) finish the story. I like the heroine, she's the one that killed an attacker with a knitting needle. I'm using her to try out all of my 'bizarre ways to kill people then cover it up' ideas. And I have a great idea about how she's going to fake her own death, though I don't know how scientifically plausible it is.

Death by knitting needle. Ouch!

"Madame Mavis's Place" One of those "brothels existing in a preternatural void" stories that you find in just about every zine. ;-) A coming-of-age tale about the young boy who cleans the bathrooms there, and through the use of his magical go-cart learns about the tragedies of war, life and especially death. In fact, the final draft is almost done (4,500 words) so it won't be a WIP much longer. Thanks for asking, Jon! Good question for a post. *g*

I'm trying to figure out why a brothel's bathroom attendant would take his magic go-kart to work with him :)

Got in two hours of editing this morning on my Beside the Darker Shore novel (and part of that work involves finding the right title--been doing a bit of research on that).

Hope the break with the flash fiction brings you back to the novel with plot-hole issues resolved. My last major editing had to do with plot holes, but this time around it seems a little ... fuller.
Aug. 17th, 2009 04:37 pm (UTC)
I don't know about anyone else, but I'd say you've got a ctachy title already. What's it about?

As for the plot-hole, it's my own silly fault. Still, my attempts to research a my way out of it has taken me to some interesting places. I'm currently reading up on organic GPS systems, powered by the electricity generated by the human body :)

I'm rewriting a short SF piece titled "Recycled Dreams". Religion vs. science, ideological isolationism, defiance, hope and other matchsticks I probably shouldn't be playing with but am.

You'll be alright, unless you also have stuff about outlines, or the use of passive tense and adverbs, in which case, you're really stirring up trouble for yourself :)

When you say short, what's the wordcount you're aiming for?

I'm about halfway through the PoV transplant on City of Ravens, a long novella or short novel (not sure how long it'll turn out yet--an old NaNoWriMo project) about a young woman who discovers she's a sorceress and sets out to free the Lord of Ravens from his prison in the shape of a silver bird.

Another great title :)

What's the market like for novellas?

WIP: working title "Old Dogs"
The one I'm concentrating most on at the moment, because of a challenege from another list is probably best described as a contemporary romance, since a relationship does begin in its chapters. It is however, more just a story about a woman who comes back to her childhood home after a nasty divorce and trying to live on her own, swallowing her pride and accepting help from her family to get back on her feet. It is (I hope) far more interesting than my plain description would indicate.

Re: WIP: working title "Old Dogs"
Everyone has such great titles! Old Dogs certainly gives you an idea of what to expect from the novel, and in a good way :)

I've got a few things but the primary right now is an anti-superhero story called Loss of Powers.

There's also a couple horror stories on the backburner - one called The Finger of God and the other a holiday story. Need to get to those STAT :)
Aug. 17th, 2009 05:23 pm (UTC)
Nice. Like black_faery above, I see you prefer to keep a few projects on the go at any one time :)

Is Loss of Powers a short?

Cool question Jon, it's really interesting to read about everybody's works in progress!

Well, as you know my current WIP is called "Algae". It's about a guy who's a diesel mechanic and aspiring artist on a planet where it's always cold. I guess it's sort of a science fiction romance. Heehee!

Best of luck with that plot hole. *tosses down some climbing gear*

Sci-fi romance. Sounds cool - no pun intended ;)

My current wip is a contemporary YA, updating what is probably my most favorite novel (first published in 1813). I'm not sure how viable my version will be, but it's something I have to at least completely draft through, if only to prove I can.
Aug. 17th, 2009 05:31 pm (UTC)
1813, is that War and Peace?

Aug. 17th, 2009 05:38 pm (UTC)
Three works in progress:

The Love Song of Oliver Toddle: A short story about a female mechanic who falls in love with a gnome who works in the same garage.

That Werewolf Veterinarian Story: A short story about werewolves and vets that I don't really have a title for.

The Winter the Troll Danced with Old Nick: The devil, trolls, and frost elves in a Norwegian folklore tale set in Decorah, Ia.

The Love Song of Oliver Toddle, amazing title :)

My amazing powers of deduction are picking up a fantasy element in each of these stories. Do you ever write in other genres?

The current WIP is called Running Black. I can't dig into too many of the plot details, but it's a fantasy novel set in DC. Imagine Burn Notice and State of Play with werewolves and air elementals.
Aug. 17th, 2009 05:52 pm (UTC)
Sounds like a story with movie potential :)

I have two going at the moment. 'Visions' my occult crime/mystery, and trying to do revisions to my demon thriller 'The Saints OF Belvedere Road'

But not today. Too. Damn. Hot. Period.
Aug. 17th, 2009 06:16 pm (UTC)
My office is next to the fridge, so I'm okay :)

In a purely unrelated coincidence, 'Visions' was the name of the first song I ever recorded with myself on lead vocals (back in 1986 when I was with The Forgotten Hearts - can't remember the name of the recording studio, but it was in London somewhere), and I once lived in Belvedere, Kent for over a year.

Can anyone else hear the Twilight Zone theme? :)
