The panel/Q&As we put on at libraries through the New Jersey Authors' Network have proved quite successful, but lately, I've been thinking about how to put on some author events aimed primarily at readers.

First and foremost, I think I need to be able to offer libraries a finished package, requiring little or no work on their part (aside from promoting the event, of course), which would make the proposal much more attractive from their point of view.

The obvious thought is a book fair of some sort, perhaps combined with brief 'Meet the Author' sessions, held in another room (or rooms) throughout the day. The separate rooms could feature things like brief (500-word) readings or perhaps some form of 'Ask the Author' Q&A, depending on what folks want.

So far, I'm liking the idea, but I feel it needs something more, so I thought I'd seek some outside opinions.

If you have any suggestions, or you've seen something elsewhere that you feel might work for a multi-author event at a library, I'd love to hear about it.

With that in mind, my question for today is:

As a reader, what would you like to see at a multi-author event?

Well, people have played match-the-word before, and that can come close. And Bingo's fun.

I'm thinking more reader-oriented events, Irene.

It's difficult when it's a multi-author thing, because those coming for Fur-Face aren't necessarily going to be interested in adult fare.

As far as Fur-Face is concerned, dressing up in a black cat suit couldn't hurt. :-P

I'm doing a 5-minute reading at an author event on Sunday at the Belmar Arts Council, but I won't be reading from Fur-Face.

I plan to give the audience a couple of drabbles instead. I figure they'll go down more easily. At the end I'll give them my 5-line 'evil scientist with a dastardly invention' blurb from the back of the book.

If they like what they hear, I'm sure they'll stop by my table to check it out.

The Philadelphia main library on 20th and the Parkway in Philadelphia has one every year. It is scheduled for an entire weekend, and each day they have several authors speaking about the inspiration for the book, what research are problems they encountered writing the book, and then they spend time taking and answering questions. Outside of the building, they have booths set up featuring publishers, editors and self publishers. It's really nice. Are you thinking of presenting this yourself? I'm sure you could set something up just as good as the one in Philadelphia.

Thanks, Marie. That sounds like a great event :)
