Backbreaking work

Yesterday, we got the basement carpet up. It had been more or less dry for a couple of days, but we missed the mold deadline by a long way, so it had to go. No underlay, just 675 square feet of stubborn, unyielding fabric, glued fast to the floor. It may not sound like much, but boy did it take some shifting. Every slice of carpet stuck to the concrete like a great sticky thing that didn't want to let go of the...er thing it was stuck to.
It didn't help having to work around the furniture, but after three-and-a-half-hours of sweaty, exhausting work,  our once comfy carpet was cut into managable pieces and placed in a couple of dozen extra large garbage sacks.

The basement floor's a mess now. Lots of glue (and a few bits of carpet underside) remain, but that's a job for another day. For now, I'll just enjoy the lack of stinky basement smell and console myself with the knowledge that it could have been so much worse - I might have had to take the carpet up myself instead of just fetching cold drinks for the folks who actually did the work.

How's your weekend going?

Awwww, I was about to feel sorry for you, but them... ;p As a person who HAS pulled up two rooms of carpeting (and put back laminate flooring) I can say it really is no fun - AND the back side of carpeting is rather scratchy...

As for me, this will hopefully be a week of mudding, sanding, and tile work to reclaim my bathroom!

Best of luck :)

My weekend went on vacation without me, and has no intention of sending at least a postcard.

If I can be of any help at all, you're in worse trouble than you think :)

Youch - no fun at all! Hmm, my weekend's been going pretty nicely. Until I got pulled over last night by a police officer to be informed my tags are expired! O_O Luckily he let me off with just a warning but I know what I'm doing first thing Tuesday! It ruined my night anyway. Hubby says I don't have enough experience being pulled over - he thought it was pretty funny how traumatized I was...

At least the nice policeman let you off :)

Ughhh, so sorry to hear about the carpet in the basement. Dreadful :-(

My weekend is much less eventful, I'm happy to report. I'm writing a little. Later today I will pull up some poison ivy.

I hope you remembered to wear gloves :)

The basement sure smells better without it. Enjoy your holiday :)

Oy, sorry to hear of all your troubles! I hope everything dries up fast and there is little damage!
Sep. 5th, 2011 06:15 pm (UTC)
Nothing too serious, just carpet :)

Not that it's any consolation,
but I've been listening to my landlord removing carpet upstairs
for several weeks.
Sep. 5th, 2011 06:14 pm (UTC)
Upstairs? I hope it wasn't flooded!
Sep. 5th, 2011 06:19 pm (UTC)
Some of it did get wet when the pipe upstairs leaked,
but all of it had to be replaced anyway.

So am I :)

Spent Saturday morning helping my old roommates go through the ruins of their home and sort everything into two big piles. That which was over the 4 1/2 foot flood line and therefore salvageable, and everything else.

The everything else had to be hauled out to the curb and thrown out. Thankfully, many good folks arrived to help, and a lot was accomplished. Unfortunately, it is just one step in many. There's much, much more work to be done.

Unforgiving? stubborn? Sounds like my old gran ;)

Oh, no, Jon - you had storm damage? I'm so sorry to hear that! I've been scarce around these parts and am now woefully behind, so I hope that the basement carpet was the worst of it! We were lucky and got off unscathed. Water in the garage, but that's not new for us so there's nothing that can be damaged down near the floor...

Thanks, Kim. Some friends of mine had it far worse (as of last Saturday, they still hadn't been allowed back in their home), so we're not complaining (too much) ;)

Oh, no...there was so much devastation from this storm...really heartbreaking to see peoples' belongings stacked alongside the road for the trash, waterlines up by the windows. I hope your friends are allowed back home soon, and don't find too much damage!
