As many of you already know, LiveJournal came under another DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack by hackers this week. This has happened before and will almost certainly happen again.

LiveJournal’s unlikely to go down without a fight, but if the same political regime is indeed responsible for this second round of attacks – which pretty much crippled LJ for the best part of four days this last week – I don’t see them stopping anytime soon.

Caught in the middle are nearly forty million LiveJournal users. Regular folks like you and me, with no particular axe to grind, all we want is to post on our own blogs and read our friends’.

A few people have already left. For most of them, I suspect the recent problems provided a final nudge rather than a compelling reason, but if the attacks continue to close down LJ for days at a time, there’ll come a point when the rest of us have to ask ourselves if we should leave too.

Personally, I intend to stay to the bitter end. If the outages were due to inefficiency or financial greed on LJ’s part, I’d feel different, but from what I understand, LiveJournal is the victim of a politically motivated attack (see this Time magazine article from back in April).

Besides, if everyone abandons LJ for the (supposedly) greener pastures of Dreamwidth, Wordpress or Blogspot etc., who’s to say those blog hosts won’t come under attack next?

The hackers aren’t trying to close down LJ for the fun of it, they’re trying to silence the online voices of millions of Russian bloggers. If they succeed in shutting down LiveJournal, they’ll then have to attack whichever online journal host those Russian bloggers move to next.

Depending on how bad things get, I may well have to start mirroring my blog posts elsewhere, but if the good ship, LiveJournal, really has hit an iceberg in the form of the Russian government, put me down for lessons in deckchair arranging, ‘cause I’m not heading for the lifeboats anytime soon.

How about you?

Poll #1765507 DDoS attacks on LiveJournal

Will you stick with LiveJournal if these hacking attacks continue to disrupt service?

Yes. They’ll have to prize my LJ blog from my cold dead fingers.
33(56.9%)
If they keep losing service because of all these attacks I’ll probably mirror my posts elsewhere, but I won’t close my account.
17(29.3%)
I’m already headin’ out the door.
0(0.0%)
There’s been a loss of service here on LJ?
2(3.4%)
Something else, which I’ll mention in the comments.
