Why I'm glad the Olympics aren't going to Chicago

At the risk of upsetting some of my American friends, I have to say that, while I empathize with any disappointment they may feel, I'm quite glad that the Chicago lost its bid to hold the Olympic games in 2016.

Now, before the flaming starts, let me explain.

I could be wrong, but I think the star-studded cast who turned out on  behalf of the US may actually have turned some of the committee against them.  After all, if the games are seen to go to the city which can produce the highest profile celebrities, there'd be something amiss.

Personally, I'm hoping the games go to Rio*, and South America gets to host it's first Olympics.

Just my opinion.  What do you think?

*  ETA:  Just heard Rio has won.  Yay!
