What's interesting, if you'll pardon the immodesty,
is that two years ago, self-publishing was a stigma.
Then I self-published a few collections of stories,
and self-publishing is no longer a stigma.

I can't help but wonder if I'm a cutting-edge trendsetter.

I think the reason that editors and agents give so much advice on how to write a good beginning is that it's much easier than trying to explain how to write a good middle. :)

And trying to discuss endings in a general way is next to impossible.

The Natalie Whipple article has been printed and is going up on my magnetic whiteboard at home. Her advice is excellent and impeccably timed as I'll soon close a first draft and move onto revisions. I left thank you for Natalie on her blog.

The Kristine Katheryn Rusch article was enlightening. I had heard tidbits of the problems she mentioned from traditionally published authors but she truly laid out the situation in sad, splendid detail. All I can say is "YIKES!"
