Dawn or Shaun?

Purely for research purposes (I have a (sort of) zombie character in my WiP, Bartholomew Jones and the Demon Pirate), I watched Zack Snyder's 2004 remake of George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead over the weekend.

I'm not a fan a hack and slash horror, especially when that's really all there is to a movie, but Dawn of the Dead has a lot more going for it. This is one remake I enjoyed at least as much, if not more than the original.

Of course, for me, the ultimate zombie movie is Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright's hilarious homage to the zombie genre, Shaun of the Dead (also released in 2004). Definitely one for your "Watch these movies again pile."

Not many movies can bill themselves as "A romantic comedy, with zombies." and really mean it.

How about you?

How do you like your zombies?

Dawn was good, but Sarah Polley didn't do an impromptu version of "White Lines" like Pegg and Frost. Shaun for the win!

I loved the scene when they were batting the zombie/landlord, subconciously keeping to the rhythm of Queen's Don't Stop me Now, while Kate and Shaun's mum sway to the beat :)

Well, Shaun of the Dead was a fun watch. I was in a short-lived zombie RPG at one point, and we had an npc/helper who was a vegetarian zombie. She usually carried around cabbages in her bags.

Thanks. I've heard good things about that show, but haven't quite gotten around to watching it yet :)

Return of the Living Dead (1985), for me. The first splatstick zombie flick.

Dellamorte Dellamore (1994) has a lot going for it too. As much a fantasy movie as a zombie shoot-em-up.

I really don't get the whole zombie craze, but I did enjoy Shaun of the Dead. Great satire. Simon Pegg is hilarious.

well...I love all different kinds, from Zombieland to Dawn of the Dead, to Shaun. I highly recommend a couple of other smaller zombie movies - Zombie Honeymoon ( I cried!!) and Undead (Australian movie). The Walking Dead is also very good. I love a man in uniform killing zombies.

of course, there's always Zombie Strippers lol

Shaun of the dead has pretty much killed any hopes of another Zombie movie for me. I can't even fathom one that I would like better. However, that said, nothing wrong with the classic Romero movies to enjoy. I've seen many of the Resident Evil movies, which fall into that trope, though some it it goes even beyond "zombie" into pure monstrosity. I never got around to watching the Walking Dead TV series, but I read the original graphic novel. Quite good work. If you need to borrow and will be at the next GSHW meeting, remind me and I'll bring it along to loan you.

That's kind of you, Ed, but I won't be at the next meeting. I'll be at a Don Lafferty workshop in PA that day.

Both of those movies was great, though Shaun of the Dead was my favorite. Shaun of the dead might be my favorite zombie movie so far. I liked Zombie Land though :)

I've never seen Dawn of the Dead (I am usually not really into horror, slasher movies) but I love, love, love Shaun of the Dead. It's histerical and it's brilliant. Well, it's British, British films do have a certain something *g* I especially love the scene where (if I remember correctly) some girl's boyfriend gets ripped apart by the zombies and then she hits the zombies with, well, what's left of his arm. Even after noticing what she uses to hit them :) Hilarious movie.

There were so many great bits of dark humour in that movie :)
