Interesting on the village idiot theme. Apparently, for a while in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, "idiot" (which in greek meant "private person"), was used as just that: some small village gentry with a self-directed education. It was only later that it developed the stigma of being a person of low intelligence.

So, the family joke that we were all descended from the "king" of the village, i.e. the village idiot, may not be entirely true. On the civic records, an ancestor was probably listed as an "idiot" under description of profession.

Or so I tell myself. On the good days.
