How did you choose your username and icon?

One of the first things folks do when starting a blog/Twitter/facebook account etc. is decide on a username. For writers like what I am, the choice is easy. We want to get ourselves known, so we use our own names if at all possible. Icons, though, are a whole different bowl of cabbages, as my old gran used to say.

Some people use a photo of themselves, or perhaps a picture depicting their work or hobby, others pick something amusing or eye-catching. Personally, I wanted something that showed a little about me, so I chose an icon which showed off my English heritage and shiny head. I count myself all the more fortunate to have found one that not only took off twenty pounds but twenty years too.

In many ways, I think an icon is a kind of logo, which is why I almost always stick to the same one (I even use it in the handouts I use in my blog talks).

How about you?

How did you come to choose your username and icon?

Well, I'm sorry to say that my LJ name comes directly from computer-land, where it corresponds to the first initial of my first name, the first initial of my middle name, and my entire last name. As for the icon, Redbeard was one of my nicknames in college, so I figured that the Ghost of Redbeard would work.

And here I thought you were an existential Scooby-Doo fan,
decrying the "empty laws on" the metaphysical plane...

Turns out you were only a compsci major
eating honey-roasted peanuts on a passenger plan...

Not the first time I've been disillusioned.

msstacy was already taken,
and rather than go through, number by number,
until I found one that wasn't taken,
I went directly to 13, because that's my lucky number.

I originally used an icon I got from a
"Make an icon that looks like you" website.
Then, when I took quizzilla,
"Which cartoon cat are you?"
I got Hobbes as a result, and used him for a few years.
I recently switched to the "Southern Fried Rabbit" icon
because Bugs Bunny was an important part of my childhood and intellectual development.
I tend to live life as if it were a cartoon.

A long long time ago (which is to say, after 2000 but before 2007), when I was a tween, I thought sprinkling 'meaningful' words like Darkness, Soul, Ice, Sky, etc in my writing indiscriminately was the Best Thing Evar. I also included two of those words in my then-Net handle.

Then I hit my late teens, grew some sense and cut the Not Very Meaningful words away to leave something somewhat original.

My current icon is from Gunnerkrigg Court. It's a depiction of the Cretan Labyrinth where the Minotaur was imprisoned. I chose it to intersect with one of my current fandoms, Inception.

My user name was for ease of remembering. And my icon represents me pretty well: I love butterflies...I love cake...and pink is my signature color.

First, I chose knittingknots because I came out of being a serious knitter and a writer/designer of knitting stuff, and I liked the mental image of knitting things together as being a metaphor for how words are chained together to make a written work.

This was sharpened by a quote I found once: “We might knit that knot with our tongues that we shall never undo with our teeth” - John Lyly

Then I discovered that in Japanese, the word knit has nuances of poetry, a completed volume of written work, and editing, so the kanji in my user pic, which is the Japanese word for knit was a wonderful bit of serendipity. I went ahead and used it, since when I discovered that, I mainly used LJ for a place where I was hanging out with people who were Anime/Manga fans, and things Japanese were cool.

Now it's sort of my online brand, at least for the fanfiction side of my life and I use it on multiple sites.

I'm going to have to rebrand myself with my name, eventually. I've made small strides in that area. More to come (fighting against the inner voice that says its uncool/unsafe to put your real-word self online like that, but I'm making progress.)

Oh, what a tensile knot we knit

Temporus is an online identity I've had, well since there was an online to have. Before actually, if you count BBS days. It was a name I'd made up for a fantasy "series" I was writing back in Junior High/High School (early 80's), and when I joined BBSes back in the day, everyone went by a handle, not their real name, and they were limited to 8 characters. On one BBS, every geeky cliched name I wanted to use was taken, and so in frustration, I used the name/word I'd made up. And hence, I've been using it ever since.

All of my user icons are made from photographs that were made by my camera (most are by me, a few are definitely by my wife, and some we don't remember who took them). My default icon is a photo of a painting on the side of a building in Lucerne Switzerland.

I started with Mary but it was already taken- :) -- so I just kept adding letters until they took me. By the time i got to "L" I have no idea why I just didn't add the next two letters. My icon is my dog.

I like bling and sparkly, sparkly things. And I adore tiaras. They're the most shamelessly, hedonistically luxurious ornament a woman can wear. But when I needed an LJ name, Tiara was already taken and so I became Starry Diadem instead. Now I don't think I'd change it even if I could.

Other things :
- the header to my journal is always a tiara. It changes monthly.

- the quote in the header to my journal about "where tiaras scintillate shamelessly" is an adaption of the first paragraph of Geoffrey Munn's book that accompanied the V&A tiara exhibition from a few years ago (which was the best exhibition EVAH) - Tiaras Past And Present. His bigger, more complete book - Tiaras, a History of Splendour - is the most wonderful book on jewellery I've ever read and also gave me the perfect alternate name for my journal's archive.
- Korōnē - my journal name - comes from this: "the Greek word for 'curved' is used in this context for any kind of circle or circlet worn on the head to signify a connexion with the gods. This includes the wreath, the crest or horns, as well as the crown, diadem, and tiara." (The Secret Language of Tarot, by Ruth Amberstone). There's also a bit of a link to the carrion crow, whose latin name is Corvus Corone, (derived from both the latin and the greek). The crow family - crows, ravens, choughs, rooks etc - is my favourite. I adore crows.

- The journal's subheading is διάδημα - the glass hat. διάδημα (diadima) is simply how you write 'diadem' in Greek. But the Glass Hat... well, I have a niece who, when she was a little girl, had a way of putting things and a view of life that delighted me (she still delights me, now she's 20 and beautiful). When she was eight, her school took her class to the Tower of London where (of course) they saw the Crown Jewels. She loved them. She was very excited about the trip, and couldn't wait to tell me all about her visit to see what she called "the Queen's glass hats". That's what they've been called in my family ever since.

- And finally, my default icon is taken from a 1980s issue of Vogue (the Italian edition), with the model wearing a tiara of living flowers. The photograph is used in another book on tiaras (not as good as Munn's book, but with some lovely illustrations) and is, I think, one of the most striking photographic images I've seen. I just wish I looked like that.

Well, you *did* ask!

I opened my LJ account during a very bleak time in my life. I just wanted to run away. A line from my favorite fandom is

"take me out, to the black
tell them I'm not coming back"

It seemed to fit the mood and I think browncoat was taken.

The picture is one of me laughing. It makes me happy and I like pink too.
Feb. 21st, 2011 05:31 pm (UTC)

Take me out to the blackness,
take me out to the edge.
Read me some Nietzsche and Kerouac,
I don't care if I ever come back
to this existentialist quagmire
where every day is the same.
And that's why out to the black
is my LJ name.

My general online identity has been coneycat for a while, in honour of a truly great cat. My current default userpic is from the story Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, which states that the motto of the whole mongoose tribe is "run and find out." A friend and I decided it is also the motto of my own tribe, that is to say reference librarians, so she made me the userpic.
Feb. 21st, 2011 07:07 pm (UTC)

Waaaaay back in 2002 I had the wacky idea that I wanted to start an aromatherapy business. A friend helped me come up with a concept -- scents named after neuroses -- and I became the neurotic girl in charge of the whole thing. I changed the U to W to make it NEW!rotic (but a lot of people confuse it for new-erotic-girl). I'm not so focused on aromatherapy these days, but I'm still neurotic and a girl, and we're closing in on 10 years with the same internet code name!

As for the icon, it's a drawing that looks sort of like me, but I've messed with the colors and blurred some things. I have a few different versions of this icon.

I went camping on a mountain when I was 17 and nearly got eaten by the wendigo. It has profoundly affected my life. No, really!

My icon, I picked because I love Drinky Crow. It was a perfect blend of absurdity, sarchasm, and dark humor. Plus, the crow is really cute. In a totally sardonic way.

There's really such a thing as a wendigo? I did not know that.

"LizzieBelle" is a nickname a friend gave me many years ago, and thanks to my then-roommate, it stuck. *g*

My icon is from the Mad-Men-Yourself website, and it mostly looks like me, so I stuck with it. :)

Your icon reminds me a little of Samantha from the TV show Bewitched, except for the hair, of course :)

Bogwitch has been my handle since I first signed on to the internet. My son told a friend of his I was a bogwitch. I liked it. It stuck. I even used Boggy for Girl Scout camp. I still hear it shouted out in town and at the supermarket. "Hey, Boggy!" and I know it's one of my girls.

My icon has become...iconic! I don't think people on LJ even recognize me without my crow wearing boots. Unless my post is specifically about one of my kids or my skychair, it's Krahe, every time.
