Since the beginning of December, I've noticed a definite increase in the number of spam comments I get here. Not so many as to cause a problem, but where I used to get 3 or 4 in any given month, I now seem to get 4 or 5 a week - I had 3 of them just this morning.

They range from links to websites offering cheap jewelry/shoes etc. to foriegn language comments (most of which I can't read) which have no links, to nonsense comments which make no sense whatsoever.

Anyone else noticed an uptick in the amount of spam comments they've been getting?

I'm saying yes, even though my count is lower than yours. Also with one this morning, as a comment to a post made last November.

It's weird how most of the spam gets added to posts from months back. Spammers clearly don't know much about blog-reading habits.

I had a few and reported them for spam.

I do if I know for sure it's spam. If it's spam from an LJ account, I ban the user too. A lot of the foreign language ones I can't understand, so I just delete them.

I don't think I've ever gotten a spam comment, but I've noticed some spam (including a russian porn ad!) popping up in my communities.

It's the random-word-generated ones I don't understand. What's the point of those?

I started getting 3 or 4 a month a couple of months agop. No increase yet. No matter what language they're in, I banish them.

"Get thee behind me, spam!" :)
Jan. 9th, 2011 04:30 pm (UTC)
Yep. I presume that the spammers have found methods of defeating the login and account creation processes. I suppose it's only a matter of time before they flood other sites as well.

I wonder if anyone actually buys something or visits a site as a result of spam. I know I don't, as a matter of principal.

Jon, I am on facebook and Twitter but this is my account for friends and only my friends know who I am here. If someone friends me out of the blue I go look them up and only friend them back if there is a connection.

Foreign language messages get reported as spam as I haven't indicated on my profile that I can speak any. Sales of stuff also get reported. Now I have a paid account I will be making things a tad tighter.

'Only my friends know I am here'

Sad to say, but they really don't. Spammers have all manner of ways of finding folks. As for friending, I'm the same as you. I always check that folks are real before friending them back.

Yes. I never used to get spam but Im getting about 3 a week mostly in languages I dont know.
Jan. 9th, 2011 07:36 pm (UTC)
I suppose we'll have to put up with it, but it's a little annoying.
Jan. 9th, 2011 05:18 pm (UTC)
Yes, usually only one spam per two months or so. And in the past two days it was suddenly five. Still not a real problem, but a definite increase
Jan. 9th, 2011 07:37 pm (UTC)
Hopefully, it'll go back down again soon.

There are always lots. I just leave them screened and ignore them.
Jan. 9th, 2011 07:37 pm (UTC)
Best thing for them, I'd say :)
Jan. 9th, 2011 07:26 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I've been seeing an increase recently. And I've been seeing some seriously NSFW hijack ads in communities I follow, too.
Jan. 9th, 2011 07:38 pm (UTC)
I haven't noticed a problem on communities yet, though I've long since disabled them on the blog at FindAWritingGroup.com

At least all this talk of spam has reminded me of that Monty Python song, so it's not all bad :)

I've seen an increase as well. Most of mine are in odd English, though one was in Russian. Several communities I follow have been hit by spam that includes nudity or outright pornography.
Jan. 9th, 2011 07:49 pm (UTC)
I get a lot of weird comments in Russian, English or (what looks like) Chinese which a: have no link, so I don't know why they bothered, and b: make no sense (though part of the problem with the Russian and Chinese ones making no sense is I can't speak either language ;)

I started getting spam about six months ago, generally when I post about any current event or pop culture stuff. It's generally anonymous bots so I screen for anon comments, sometimes five or six comments on a single entry. I have gotten a few lj-bot comments and have banned the usernames. So far it's not out of hand but it's annoying.
Jan. 9th, 2011 09:46 pm (UTC)
Same here. It's usually when the post is about TV shows or the like.
Jan. 9th, 2011 08:59 pm (UTC)
Small uptic. From maybe 1 a year to maybe 1 a quarter.
Jan. 9th, 2011 09:49 pm (UTC)
1 a quarter's not too bad :)
Jan. 9th, 2011 09:36 pm (UTC)
Maybe one a month.
