GSHW workshop: READING YOUR WORK ALOUD

I'm looking forward to this Saturday's GSHW meeting at East Brunswick Library, NJ08816. It's a one-hour workshop on reading your work aloud, conducted by Hildy Silverman (aka hildy9595), editor of Space And Time Magazine, and Neal Levin (aka dqg_neal) owner of Dark Quest Books.

I did my first ever reading last November, at PhilCon, where I read a passage from Fur-Face - the scene in which Snowy fakes an injury so that Bill can get a look inside the animal research center. It seemed to go down well and I had loads of fun, but I don't doubt I've a lot to learn, so I'll be there, taking notes and (hopefully) having a turn at the imaginary microphone.

The business meeting starts at 11:00am, with the workshop starting an hour later, at noon.

Non-members are always welcome. If you can make it, don't forget say 'Hi'. Just keep an eye out for the Brad Pitt lookalike with the funny accent. I'm usually standing nearby.

What are your plans for the weekend?

Just keep an eye out for the Brad Pitt lookalike with the funny accent.

This is misleading information, because I won't be there.

The mother of my student worker from Venezuela is in town. She is going to teach me how to make her empanadas.

Probably trying to keep my crazy husband from shoveling snow all day. He seriously shovels paths all over our two acre property.

LOL, a husband who won't stop shoveling snow? More of us should have this problem!

I have private practice clients Saturday and then I will be critiquing someone's MS.

I'm eager to hear (read) what you learn about reading passages. Dot just did a post about tips she picked up on reading out loud. In one of my comments to someone, who mentioned being nervous about such things, I hinted that I may do some posts about public speaking anxiety. Maybe we can tie our post together (link one to the other)?

Sounds like an excellent workshop!

My weekend plans include enjoying my daughter's last Saturday at home--and probably some revisions on my wip--as well as driving her back to college.

Ah, the old college ferry routine. I'll be doing some of that my own self later this year :0

Cool! Have fun, then schedule a reading somewhere. There's nothing so fulfilling as reading your story to an audience and having them applaud at the end. Ah, the spotlight! :)

They're supposed to applaud? I'll consider it a success if no one throws anything :)

Barring weather based issues, I plan to be at the meeting to heckle...I mean help critique your Reading. (And then I'll get lambasted when I take my turn at the virtual microphone)

Let me know if they give any tips for authors AVOIDING ever having to read their work aloud, lol. I'd forgo success rather than have to read aloud. I believe I would need years of training to get over my reluctance and fear. From the video clip you offered on one of your talks, I think you'd be very good at it.

The worst advice I ever got about talking/singing in public was to imagine the audience naked. It seemed like a good idea at first, until I saw my old gran sitting in the front row with her usual 'What's that awful smell' expression and a sack of 'past sell-by date' vegetables on her lap :(
