I got another order for the Fur-Face CD/I are a writer! mug offer in the mail yesterday. The envelope had a Florida postmark. It contained $13 in cash, along with a lovely note from someone named Laura, telling me not to worry about the 5 cents in change.

If you're reading this, Laura, thanks for the order, unfortunately, you forgot to tell me your surname or where I'm supposed to send it. Please email me to let me know: jon@acatofninetales.com.

YA Bloggers wanted
After a lot of thought, I've decided to give up my regular columns at The Apex Book Company's blog and YAAYNHO (Young Adult Authors You've Never Heard Of). I had fun writing for them, but I want to focus a bit more on writerly type writing - I'll continue to post a regular(ish) column over at Flash Fiction Chronicles.

YAAYNHO is run by my friend, Christine Norris. If you're a Young Adult/Middle Grade writer and interested in writing a regular blog column, please contact her for more information at

That's me updated.

One last thought:
NANOWRIMO seems like a popular annual event. A lot of my friends seem to be taking part, but I've never taken the plunge myself.

How about you?

Did you go for NANOWRIMO this year?

Yes, I do it every year!
Yes, this is my first go.
Not this year, but I've done it before.
I always say a big 'No, no!" to NaNoWriMo
What the heck is NaNoWriMo?

Yep, I start nano every year. I like it for the practice in sustained, longer story writing, because, in part, longer stories intimidate me, and I've been spending way too much time being satisfied writing flash fiction.

Did a ton of preparation this year and it's paying off. I've never generated so many first draft words so quickly - my normal writing style is pretty recursive; write for a little while, edit, write a bit more, edit, see a conclusion, call it done (works really well for short pieces!)

I've been sitting on my internal editor...it's making notes, though. I know I've skimped on the solidity that I normally bring in, and it's thinner than I like on scene setting, and I'll probably add a lot more, well, transitional and character development later. But I find it's great practice for pushing the plot line forward. And I need that a lot. Plus I have the need to get over some mental blocks about plotting long stories.

But I wouldn't want to do this more than once a year!

I imagine it's a good incentive for September/October time as well as November.
