Anyone else going to PhilCon?

This year will be my second at
PhilCon.

I had a great time there last November.  I made some new friends, like the excellent Patty Cryan (aka p_m_cryan), and John Grant (aka realthog), winner of this year's
Puddle Award for Best Book Title - tune in tomorrow for his victory interview.

This year,
PhilCon's guest speaker is the multi award winning Peter S. Beagle.

(sorry, don't know who took this photo)

Peter had his first novel published back in 1960.  Fifty years later, he's still going strong.  Here's a list of his recent/upcoming publications:
  • Return, 2010 (limited edition novella chapbook from Subterranean Press)
  • Two Hearts, 2010 (limited chapbook edition of Hugo and Nebula Award-winning novelette sequel to The Last Unicorn)
  • Writing Sarek, 2010 (Star Trek nonfiction with annotated "Sarek" teleplay)[1]
  • Sméagol, Déagol, and Beagle: Essays From the Headwaters of My Voice, 2010 (nonfiction essay collection)
  • Summerlong, 2010 (magical realist novel set in modern-day Seattle)
  • The First Last Unicorn and Other Beginnings, 2010 (story collection with additional essay material)
  • Three Faces of The Lady, 2010 (collection centered on "Come Lady Death")
  • I'm Afraid You've Got Dragons, 2010 (YA novel)
  • Green-Eyed Boy: Three Schmendrick Stories, 2010 (story collection with additional essay)
  • Three Unicorns, 2010 (story collection with additional essay)
  • Four Years, Five Seasons, 2010 (story collection)
  • Sweet Lightning, 2011 (1950s baseball fantasy novel)
  • Sleight of Hand, 2011 (story collection)
I hope I can be that productive one day.

I'm looking forward to hearing what Peter has to say.

How about you?

What Cons are you off to between now and the end of the year?

I hear a lot about how it's not as good as it once was, but I certainly enjoyed myself last year.

I got lazy, and used LJ's handy LJ user widget thing instead of using html. It works most of the time, but every once in a while it eats up part of the post for some reason.

I've fixed it now :)

OMG, I'm a HUGE Peter S Beagle fan! Tell me more about Philcon, the when, the where, the oh my goodness I may have to come!

Last weekend was our local VCON (Vancouver's Fantasy, Sci Fi and Gaming convention) and in a couple weeks I'm headed off to the "big one", the World Fantasy Convention in Ohio. I can't wait, tons of friends are going (all of whom I've met at different cons the last two years) and I'm super excited! (can you tell, lol)

'What Cons are you off to between now and the end of the year?"

Well... I should stop by the Jail and see "Uncle Bernie Madoff"... maybe he'd like to try something simple this time, like a little Three Card Monte.

Yeah, I really wish they weren't so close together! And I wish Philcon was a different, time, too. We used to go but now it's just too much all at once.

Always one for nailing down details,
I found the photo credits on wikipedia;
It was taken at UCal Berkeley 21 February 2006
by his business manager, and has been released into the public domain.

Meanwhile, the nearest I'll come to a PhilCon any time soon
is watching Sgt. Bilko reruns.

Hey, quick question. Is Philcon only for spec fic? I have a friend who writes literary/mainstream who might enjoy this.

I'd say it's aimed at spec fiction, but that doesn't mean your friend wouldn't enjoy it. The more the merrier, right? :)

True. Okay, I'll see if he'd like to come along with me.
