GSHW, anthologies and short story news

Looking forward to this Saturday's Garden State Horror Writers meeting, featuring my friend, author, writer and editor, Danielle Ackley-McPhail (aka damcphail), who'll be giving a presentation on the making of an anthology.

Danielle's always fun, so if you're free on Saturday, and can make it to East Brunswick Library (12 Jean Walling Civic Center, East Brunswick, NJ 08816-3529) in time for a noon start, you'll be glad you came.

I haven't seen most of my GSHW friends since the meeting in June, on the day the US played England in the World cup when, as you may recall, England came within a mere nine goals of beating the American team by an incredible ten goals to one.  As you might imagine, I'll have some fun, reminding them of their narrow escape from ignomy.

Writing wise, I finished a 1,000-word flash fiction piece yesterday.  Not sure I nailed the ending, but it's the first story I've completed that wasn't a drabble in a loooooong time.

Next up, a complete rewrite of Waking up Jack Thunder from first to last page.

How about you?

What are you working on at the moment?

Congrats on the flash!

I haven't figured out yet whether I'm coming Saturday; it might depend on whether this stomach bug has left by then.

I currently have two projects: editing an urban fantasy novel (it involves witchcraft in modern Boston: that makes it both urban and fantasy) that needs another 30k or so added in this pass, and crafting my author Website. For which I have a question for you: what permissions, if any, did you need to use the cover of Fur-Face on your blog?

Hi Erin,

I hope your feel better in time for Saturday.

As for using book covers. If I remember correctly, there's a clause in my contract which gives me the right to use the book cover for promotional purposes, so while I didn't have to ask for specific permission, it's because it was already granted, if that makes sense.

Good luck with your website, mine's still very much a work-in-progress ;)

Gadzooks! If I'd known YESTERDAY about the GSHW meeting, I'd have planned on it. As it happens, I just agreed to houseguests. Jeez, Jon! Thanks for saving me!

One of these days, I'm going to show up at one of your writing group meetings. I'll be the tattooed lady trying to get your attention.
Huzzah for non-drabble!

I wrote a flash bit this morning--well, a first draft--for a fun project an LJ friend is doing for the month of October. 473 words. I'm happy with it. For now.

Now, back upstairs to continue on ATNL.

Get to work on Jack Thunder, sir. I WANT TO READ IT!

That flash isn't set in a haunted house by any chance?

The only downside of novel writing (for me), is that it can take a long time to get something polished to the point where I can submit it, so I'm glad to have finished a story.

Mind you, I daresay it'll need some more work once my crit group have mauled it cast their wisdomous eyes over it :)

w000t for finishing that flash piece!

I'm refribulating a short story right now, and it's going slooooowly.

1000 is good. Flash fiction is good :)

It might yet mutate into a short story :)

I finished a rough rough draft of a short story. It'll need a lot of work, but the darn thing is done.

Now, all I need to do is take care of the insanity that is regular work.
Sep. 9th, 2010 01:37 am (UTC)
How rough is the draft?

Ah, I won't be around this Saturday. I'll have to look forward to a future meeting.

At the moment, I'm trying to edit. I've amassed a huge amount of half-finished and unedited stories.

I'm sorry I won't see you there, Misha. Maybe next time :)

I've been updating my World Tree for-fun serial, delight_in_wt three times a week, and my novel Sign and Sacrifice twice a week. I'm not really happy about my progress on the latter, though. And getting kind of blah about the whole schedule thing. -.-

Schedules are good, but sometimes they can be a pain too.

Plunking away at my current WIP that I have recently started working on again.

It's hard to get back into a WiP after a break - at least it is for me :(

Congrats on the flash piece. All the best with it.

Thanks, Mary. I'm quite pleased with the quality of the writing, but I think the ending's going to need a little more work.

I am working on my fourth Delacorte novel, now titled LIVING BACKWARDS, but probably that will change, about a guy who remembers things before they happen. It is wayyyy confusing. I keep going, "Wait, did I really sell this book? WHY? Can't I write something else?"

But guess what? I just realized you will be at the Toms River Bookfest. And I WILL BE THERE TOO! Hooray. Good luck with your flash fiction and your rewrite!

Excellent! I love it when I get to meet my online friends in person :)

That's a shame, Krista. Maybe next time.

Good luck with that September deadline :)

At the moment I am revising my wip, StT. Ten pages today, which, since this is the Major Revision (as opposed to General Tweaks, sir, yes sir), is a pace I'm comfortable with.
Sep. 9th, 2010 01:56 am (UTC)
I'm terrible with revisions. I start off with the best intentions, but end up whizzing through too fast and having to do it again...and again...and again :(
