Did you know excuses can kill dreams?

I recently joined up with those fine folks over at YA Authors You've Never Heard Of.  They're a great bunch of bloggers and I'm delighted to be writing a regular blog column over there.

My debut post went up this morning.  It's called Beware Excusitis - the Failure Disease, something which I struggled with earlier this year.

It's about how making excuses can bring your writing productivity to a halt and how, if left unchallenged, it can squeeze the life out of your ambition.

If you'd like to read it, here's the link

Great post. Caught that bug myself this summer. I like your Gran's cure.

It took me a few repeat prescriptions, but it definitely works :)

I think we've all been through Excusitis at some point. It's almost as if we fear making the complete commitment to writing, as much as we enjoy it.

WFMAD (Write for 15 Minutes a Day) is also a good way to cure excusitis. 15 minutes can be found on even the busiest days.

It also helps if the project you are working on is really compelling, because then the project pulls you to write, rather than you sitting yourself down.

This particular bout was caused by the book launch. Up until May 2nd, I thought Fur-Face wasn't coming out until the middle of next yesr. Then it was June 30th, but on May 17th, I found out it was sceduled for release on June 1st.

I think it's fair to say that it became even more of a compelling project then :)

That's why I often take a Drill Sergeant approach/tone
whenever I hear what sounds like excuses.

Ah, Drill Sergeants. My old gran used to eat them for breakfast, and I'm talking about the British ones, not those soft, cuddly marine types you have here in the US :P

Sometimes I take a soft, cuddly, Pomeranian approach.

Tried to comment over there but not sure it posted - THANK YOU for that post!! I needed to read it, because I've had a terrible case of excusitis for several weeks now. But I'm taking action right now. :D

Great post! I'm laughing about the "maybe you had family visiting" excuse, because that's why I'm behind on my wordcount after last week. :) But I'm already catching up.

Excellent article! As you said...

"You stop going to your local writing group. After all, there’s no harm in missing a meeting or two."
