Thanks for these. I didn't know about the whole SISTERS RED issue so I'm happy you linked to it. I was a beta-reader on it and am totally shocked.

It just shows how different folks see things in different ways.

Thanks, Jon! (and for the boost!)

I liked the Samantha Hayood article rather a lot.

There've been some big changes over the last few years, that's for sure.

Well done lovely. The Sister's Red one really chapped my hide. I read that book. The CHARACTER had a personality flaw. CHARACTERS have those.

Hehe, and not just characters :)

There are so many winners in this week's collection, Jon! The one I'm making a note of is from Maggie Kamison: "...put your characters through hell, but make your readers do the weeping."

'...but make your readers do the weeping'

I can do that alright. The guys in my critique burst into tears the last time I told them I;d have something for the next meeting :)

My favorite this week is definitely mine. Kiiiidding. Earlier in the week I actually read Jim Hines's article about how the publishing industry has changed and found it fascinating.

It's amazing how much has changed in such a short time.

Thanks for the mention! And thanks for posting these in general. It's very handy! I had somehow missed the bogwwitch64 post; I also enjoyed Jim Hines' and Joe Konrath's insights.

Great list :) (The mention of International Reply Coupons on Jim Hines brought back a memory I'd buried... god, they were a pain).

The Sisters Red one... that's increasingly familiar, methinks, but a good solid discussion of the author's worries (it's difficult because even if you try and allow for current subtexts and reading, ten years down the track - let alone fifty - everyone may see it completely different and damn both you and your critics. Best we can do is just... the best we can do).

I think if people want to see the bad in something, they can usually find a way, and there's nothing like a bit of righteous indignation to make folks feel good about themselves (and a ittle superior too, if truth be told)...not that I'd dare post that on someone else's blog :)

Hi, Jon! Thanks for including my post here. I've had some interesting feedback :)

I'm so behind that I haven't had the chance to read any of these yet ... I'll be returning. Hope everything is going well with you. Thanks always for all your contributions here!
