Savor the moments

Well, I'm back, refreshed and raring to go.

When I decided to get serious this blogging thing, I studied the techniques of people with successful journals to see if I could figure out how they made theirs a success (and hopefully copy them).  Fantasy author, Jim C. Hines (aka jimhines), is one of the people I try to emulate, so you can imagine how delighted I am to be a guest on his blog today.

My post there is called Savor the moments
, something I've been thinking a lot about during the last couple of months.  If you'd like to read it, you can find it here.

When I first constructed the reason for carrying on in the face of indifference as being a duty to the stories that choose you to tell them I thought I was being more than a little precious. Now I don't think that at all. The stories do choose us to tell them - the good ones, the ones that leave you feeling fulfilled - and we do have an obligation to them. I also remember Garry Kilworth telling Mike Cobley and I (at the Brighton Worldcon?) that you either write or you don't.

Good point, Martyn. The really good stories demand to be told, and won't leave us alone until we write them down...the little beggars.

Thanks for sharing :)

I enjoyed your post - Good points. I find although I get discouraged at times - it really takes very little to encourage me to keep trying - (a personal rejection letter, an encouraging note or comment - and I'm off and running again)

They're the flotsam which we need to cling to in order to keep the dream afloat ;)

My moment to savor was getting some positive feedback and interest in my podcast from someone half the country away.

Well, to be fair I posted the other one first and then realized that it might be a bit off topic so I left it vague. Then I figured you'd want an answer, so it became like a little blog-crumb trail to follow!

For me it's simple: I have made my commitment to it.

I've been on the other end of a submission cycle a good while now, hoping I'll have some moments to savour soon.

*blink*

I hadn't thought of this as something at which one could
either succeed or fail.
That might explain a lot.

I guess you only fail if you give up.
