I agree with James Scott Bell on how those common pieces of advice can often be set aside.

It's surprising how easy it is for guidelines to become commandments :)

And so many of these "rules" have come about because they are things that most people do badly (like starting off with the weather--it's often done in a dull way that doesn't connect much to the main action). Yet you can break practically any rule if you do it with purpose and to good effect.
