The one about writing what you know is interesting, although I realised long ago that [a] if everyone did, there would be waaaaayyy less to read in the fantasy/SF line and [b] if I did, my stories would win prizes in Soporific of the Century awards...

A lot of great stories would never get told if we only wrote about stuff we really knew - and most of the ones that did get written would be a lot less fun to read :)

Yes.... crime novels would be a whole different bag too (I'm sure my one parking and two speeding tickets in the last twenty years will make for riveting... something :)
