I also read Robin's post earlier and agree it's memorable, and found Karina Wilson's to be helpful, among the other good choices.

I enjoyed Mark Nelson's post. I've had incidents like that. Sometimes it's a one time fluke, sometimes I try and try until I give them up, which is always difficult. What's funny is I've noticed the more I love an author, the more a badly written book disappoints. I read one 18 months ago and I'm still recovering from the disappointment.

I suppose our expectation level is higher when we've read and enjoyed earlier works.

I suffered a similar disappointment with season 3 of Sherlock :(
