I was amazed at the reaction from her 1980s audience. I would have thought folks wanted the reality check about how things worked.

Mind you, it may have been the way she told them :)

Well, if they were in the actively-submitting phase, they were probably swimming in rejections (because that is what the actively-submitting phase is like for almost everyone) and didn't want to hear more downer talk about how it doesn't get easier. I do think that writers need pep talks and inspiration, and lots of both. But we don't need ONLY pep talks and inspiration. Reality has its place.
