Actually, that's how they write a book - by writing a "how-to" book on writing, and thinking out the process. But you can't read them so much, that you forget to actually write; which is, after all, the fun of writing, to sit and discover your chosen material, whether it be exploring a strange new world, or covering familiar terrain with a new story. Either way, it's a voyage of discovery.

I like to flip through the pages every now and then, selecting a random topic. I nearly always learn something new (or remember something I shouldn't have forgotten) :)

I hang on to a lot of exercises (took a few correspondence writer's classes, in addition to reading books). Exercises can be quite useful.

Very true! There's always something new to learn or something to be reminded about when going back to a "how to" book again. There's so much to know/remember that it's impossible to get it all the first time through the book--or maybe that's just me who tends to zone out after a while. ;-)

I found out quite by accident. I think it's one of those 'When the student is ready...' kind of things :)

Re-reading books on writing is a great way to keep yourself in the writing mood. I think i'm going to go re-read one now.
