In the 1860s, Prince Albert took great pains to avoid another war against The United States.
Not only did he recognzie the impracticabilty of bringing the former rebels back into the Empire,
he also recognized that they had only fought against Britain as a means,
rather than as the object.
The Americans had fought for the self-evident truths that all are created equal,
and endowed with certain inalienable rights, and that to secure these rights,
governments are instituted among us,
deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.
Although we in the United States are still fighting,
and more often than not against ourselves,
one would be hard-pressed to find anyone in England, Wales, Scotland,
Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or India
who does not today agree whole-heartedly with those ldeals
Americans began fighting for almost two and a half centuries ago.

'The Americans had fought for the self-evident truths that all are created equal'

All except the poor buggers they didn't think were created equal, but that's a lecture for another time :P

Even for them, actually,
although the constitution had to be ammended
for the promise to be more than piecemeal...
An imperfect revolution, once begun,
can be perfected after it has succeeded.
Sort of like the first draft of a novel.

At the time, it sounded like the perfect thing to do. I, for one, are having some second thoughts on the matter.

Well, in this case I think it's really true. Just look at the difference between a meadow here in the states and one in England. The one in England is much greener. ;P

For what it's worth, both of my families didn't arrive until that unpleasantness was concluded.
