INTELLIGENCE TEST

My friend, Diane Sismour, posted this on a Yahoo Group. It made me lol, out loud (and also made me feel a little dumb), so I copied the intelligence test below.

Let's see how you do.

Read each question, then say your answer aloud before scrolling down to the answer.

First question:

You are a participant in a race. You overtake the person in second place. What position are you in?

}

}

}

}

}

}

}

If you answered 'First', you are absolutely wrong. If you overtake the second person, you take his place ie: you are in second place!

Try to do better next time.

Now answer the second question, but don't take as much time as you took for the first question, ok?

Second question:
If you overtake the last person, then you are...?
}

}

}

}

}

}

}

If you answered 'second to last', you are.....
Wrong again. Tell me sunshine, how can you overtake the last person??

You're not very good at this, are you?

Third question:
very tricky arithmetic! Note: this must be done in your head only. Do not use paper and pencil or a calculator.

Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000 now add 30.
Add another 1000. Now add 20... Now add another 1000.
Now add 10. What is the total?
}

}

}

}

}

}

}

Did you get 5000?

The correct answer is actually 4100...

If you don't believe it, check it with a calculator!
Today is definitely not your day, is it?

Maybe you'll get the last question right.... Maybe...

Fourth question:

Mary's father has five daughters: The first four are named, Nana, Nene, Nini and Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter?
}

}

}

}

}

}

}

Did you think the answer was 'Nunu'? Of course it isn't. Her name is Mary! Read the question again!

Okay, now the bonus round, i.e: a final chance to redeem yourself:

A mute person goes into a shop and wants to buy a toothbrush. By imitating the action of brushing his teeth he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is done. Next, a blind man comes into the shop who wants to buy a pair of sunglasses. How does he indicate what he wants?

}

}

}

}

}

}

}
It's really very simple
HE OPENS HIS MOUTH AND ASKS FOR IT!
Does your employer actually pay you to think?
If so do not let them see your answers for this test!

So, how did you do?

Still can't work out the maths question, unless the word "take" is meant to stand in for the phrase "take away"? Other than that, all is good with the head today...

It must be all that healthy European air ;)

No, the opening 'Take' is 'add'. It's easier to get the right answer if you add the 40+30+20+10 =100 and the 4*1000 separately, then add together to get 4100.

Of course, I fell into the trap of assuming they must be hundreds.

Cute. Although the snarky first question is actually poorly worded. The "second person" is non-relational. The answer could just as easily be two positions ahead of where you started, and not in second place. A better phrasing would be: "You overtake the person in second." As that would leave less room for ambiguity, and yet still potentially produce the result of someone not thinking clearly and saying "first".

Lol, I'm sure I'd still have got it wrong :)

PS: I changed the wording.

I would have done much worse, except for the stumble on the wording of the first question made me slow down. Then I saw it was all about the tricky questions, and from there, it's a bit easier. Honestly, I suspect if you put all the questions up first, and held the snark until after all the questions, I wouldn't be surprised if people scored much worse. I was tempted to print out the questions and send them to my boss to see how he did with it.

Haha...got them all right apart from over-taking the person in last place - I said you would be first having just lapped them ;-)

I only got one right :(

Yeah, my thought was 'that makes no sense unless the race is in laps, in which case you still have no information about your own place from having lapped the person in last.'

I could lie and say I got them all right or only missed one or something, but the truth is, I'm a miserable failure! Missed them all. Oh well, I'll just accept that I'm a miserable failure when it comes to this sort of thing and move on . . . maybe back to bed for some more sleep. ;-)

Hehe, I always get too cocky with these sort of quizes, and run straight into the questioner's trap :)

I'm reading slower today than usual, thanks to the one really, really blurry eye. Cataract surgery, you know. That's probably why I didn't miss, because I did not rush through them.

I missed the 'Mary's father' question (although I did think 'nothing in this pattern means that it was continued for the fifth daughter'). The questions are kind of interesting, in the way they take advantage of testing habits, but the tone of the writer is really grating. O.o

RE: The tone of the writer

I don't think Diane wrote the questions (which I softened quite a bit in translation), but I know what you mean. I kept hearing my old gran's voice as I read the responses to my feeble efforts :).

Three out of six - the last three. Totally wrong on the first two, I'm embarrassed to say!

You did better then what I did. The only one I got right was the number one :)
