Well, to tell the truth, it's neither a sword day nor a red day, but it is a grand day, at least for my son, who heads off to The College of New Jersey in a couple of hours (escorted by his lovely mother, who's somehow managed to cram all manner of room-cleaning utensils and equipment into the already bulging back of our Ford Explorer).

It's nearly eighteen years ago now, yet it only seems five minutes since my old gran saw him for the first time. "Looks more like his mother than he does you," she said. "So the boy's already dodged one bullet. Let's hope he inherits her brains too."

Luckily for him, he has.

I left school just a couple of weeks after my sixteenth birthday, so I don't have any great advice to offer him other than, "Don't fall asleep in class."

He's a good lad. I'll miss him.

Lol, most of the heavy lifting was done last night, loading the car ;)

I do. I woke up feeling quite sad this morning. We share a similar sense of humor. I'm going to miss the back-and-forth banter :(

It's weird being away from your kids - mine are both about 500 miles away -- but there is phone and e-mail. It's not the same but...

He's only an hour away, so we can add laundry day to the list of contact options :)

That's a big moment. The only one that comes close is walking away and leaving them at kindergarden on that first day.

Much good wishes to you all. To the future!

A fine time for your son--heading into the new adventures of college and all. You and your wife can take consolation in knowing you've raised "a good lad" with smarts who didn't feel a need to attend college in California! . . . And who'll be coming home for laundry day. ;~}

Lol, he did his first ever bit of ironing the other day. I'm pleased to say he didn't burn the clothes, or himself, which is better than I usually manage :)

All the best. A bit of a milestone, isn't it?

I must say that I like the sound of your gran! Is she the one you quoted earlier this week, in the ten writing tips thing?

'I must say that I like the sound of your gran!'

She was certainly one of a kind :)

Congratulations, Jon, and well done ♥ It is a bit sad, but they do come back, and they have great, great stories to share. You'll be enjoying the adventures, highs, and lows of this interesting, wonderful person who is your son, as he goes out into the world.

Just so long as he makes enough money so I can go live with him when I'm ninety, and exact my revenge ;)

Congratulations to you and your wife and best of luck to your son! I loved your grandmother's quote so much I shared it with my husband, who loved it too. Your gran sounds like she was quite a character.

It happens, more than you know! Not that I ever did, but I did end up daydreaming a lot, with the less informative and engaging professors. There's a trick to it, you see, that I finally worked out: study their personality quirks. If you make a game of it, it helps!

Aww, it's a transition of mixed feelings, isn't it? On the one hand, we're happy to see them going forth successfully in life, experiencing new things, but then ... they're not here, under our care, where we can know all the little things. My oldest daughter just moved out (she stayed home for college), and Gary and I were just saying how a lot of parents have kids leave at 18! We're feeling sad about nearly 23! But the good thing is, when you do hear from them, it's such a delight :) Best wishes to him!

How exciting! The first year is an adjustment. There are ups and downs. Just listen and support. The second year goes WAY better. And if needed...provide coffee and NoDoze. Some profs can be REALLY boring! Think Ferris Bueller.

What with facebook, cell phones and the like, it's probably much less traumatic than it was even a few short years ago.
