Eddie Cochran was wrong.
There is a cure for those Summertime blues!

Announcing:

THE 2011 MEAGER PUDDLE OF LIMELIGHT AWARD
FOR BEST BOOK TITLE

There's an ocean of talent here on the worldwide web.  Much of it doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Here's your chance to bathe in the spotlight - or at least get your socks damp in the meager puddle of limelight I can provide here on my blog.

What's this about?
Everyone knows a great book title helps catch a potential reader's eye, but now it can bring you fame and fortune too!

Okay, maybe not 'fame' exactly (and to be honest, not fortune either), but it can win you a Meager Puddle of Limelight Award as well as an I are a writer! mug/Fur-Face CD combo.

How can I enter?
It's easy peasy. You can submit up to two book titles (previous winning entries excluded). They can be from a finished book or a work-in-progress, but please note: they must be your own work
Put your entries in a comment below or send them to me within a separate email (jon@acatofninetales.com) under the heading: 2011 PUDDLE FOR BEST BOOK TITLE. After the contest submission period closes on Sunday, June 26th, I'll screen all comments until the winner's decided.

What do I win? well, aside from the mug and CD, winners get to bask in the meager puddle of limelight which my journal can provide. I'll post an interview with the top two finalists here on An Englishman in New Jersey. In addition, the winner gets the opportunity to do a guest blog too, if they want.

I don’t have a Live Journal account. Can I still enter?
Sure, but you’ll need an LJ account to vote for anything. And if you don't enter through an LJ account, be sure to leave your name and website/email address so I can contact you if needed.

Do you plan to enter your own stuff, Jon?

No. As you'll no doubt agree, with titles like Dracula vs the Daleks, Sherlock Holmes vs. the Velociraptors and the semi-autobiographical Life With My Old Gran – No Picnic and That’s A Fact, I’d be a shoe-in for the awards, but to avoid any question of foul play I’ve excluded myself from the ballot.

How will the winner be selected?

Entries will be voted on by your LJ peers in secret ballots. I'll explain the process in more detail later.

What’s the closing date for entries?
To be considered for the 2011 Meager Puddle of Limelight Awards for ‘Best Book Title’ please submit your entries by 3:00pm on Sunday, June 26th, 2011 (US/Eastern time).
JUNE 27 ETA: ALL ENTRIES SCREENED UNTIL THE WINNER IS CHOSEN BY LJ VOTE
BEST OF LUCK TO ALL WHO TAKE PART

Sure, the Puddles may not be as prestigious as a Hugo or the like, but any award voted for by your peers is one worth having. Besides, just like those shiny diamonds people like to sing about, bragging rights are forever.

Good luck to all who take part, or as previous contestants might say:

Vene, vidi, puddli!

I've already been on The Ed Sullivan show,
so to speak, and would like to leave the opportunity
more widely available to others...
and, of course,
the larger and more diverse the group winning recognition becomes,
the more prestigious my having previously won it will be...
you might say the Meagre Puddle of Limelight
is an award that keeps on awarding...

"You were warned", indeed. The working title of my series, which I finally reached the beginning of the story for, and which was also the original title of the short story, written by me and published in Thet Cosmic Unicorn #1, is, was, and working: Swain's World.

"the", not "thet". Thought I'd found all the typos. Sorry!

These always look like fun, so I'm glad to be taking part, no matter how poor my rating. ;-)

Is this books-only? Or can I submit a magazine title?

Sorry, Bernie. It's books only, I'm afraid.

Hmm...current WIP is remaining nameless, so this is a good time to think of something better than 'new story' which is what it's currently saved under!

Winter of Ash

Will come back if I have any more (better) ideas... :-)

And title number two...

Crimson Snow

I actually rather like that one...watch it crash and burn ;-) (or crash and melt, possibly...)

Titles have always been a challenge for me. My two favorite completed (though always vulnerable to editing) manuscript titles are:

Seekers and Solutions

Kaylee, Riverboat Dog

Michael A Ventrella

Of my 2011 books:

The most recent is "A Bard's Eye View", a collection I edited of short stories in a fantasy world.

Then my new work is about a vampire who runs for President. It's called "Bloodsuckers" -- which is something people call politicians all the time, only this time it's true.

Last year, my novel was "The Axes of Evil" and no, that's the correct spelling. Another young adult fantasy novel.

2. When Sorcerer’s Attack

Books Two and Eight respectivly, in The Watchtower series.

Due exclusively to the fact that I never win these puddle awards, I have decided to call my next novel: The Basketballs of Doom.

Seriosuly, I wonder how many people have gone with far-out titles just to be in this with a shot...
